We recently had a tractor in our shop for major repairs. A rear axle bearing had failed. The culprit was baling twine that had wrapped around the axle and worked its way into the seal destroying it. This allowed oil out and dirt in which eventually led to bearing failure. Its likely that if the twine had been removed when first encountered or soon after, this repair would have been avoided. The takeaway? Keep a look out for any string, wire or other debris wrapping around axles or shafts where seal damage can occur.
